Visiting Église Saint-Laurent

The church of Saint-Laurent in Flaignes was open during our visit, as was its sister church in Havys. However, we do not know if this is always the case, as an event was taking place in the village hall that day.

The first church on the site was built at the turn of the 12th/13th century from an old chapel that had been erected around the year 1000. Inside, there are elements of the early Gothic period, which can be dated between 1175 and 1220.
The round tower protecting the northern transept dates from 1480 and is one of the oldest defensive towers in the region. It provides access to the escape room in the attic.

The rest of the church was then fortified around 1584, and formed the almost complete defence system that we can still see today, with a bretèche (which is still indicated by corbels on the transept), numerous embrasures and strong buttresses.
