Visiting Église Saint-Martin

The small church of Saint-Martin in Monceau-lès-Leups has a curious appearance. The old Romanesque church is still recognisable, but the choir has been raised by a high room built of brick and white stone. An escape room was created there. This consists of a brick bulwark, which is located in the east in the axis of the church, several embrasures, one of which allows a slanted shot, and windows.

This room is accessed via a spiral staircase (made of sandstone), which is protected by a projecting turret flanking the choir and the nave. This is pierced by several elongated openings, which probably served as embrasures.

The church was further restored in the 19th and 20th centuries, with a series of beautiful stained glass windows by master glazier Francis Chigot being installed in the 1920s.

Unfortunately, this church – like most others in the neighbourhood – is locked and there is no information on where to obtain a key.
