Visiting Église Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte
The church of Saint-Cyr et Sainte-Julitte in Tarzy has obviously just been renovated. When we visited in March 2023, it shone in new splendour. Unfortunately it was closed, so we could not take any photos inside.
A first church on the site was built around 1250 on a slight hill within the village. In 1570 it was fortified after damage in 1521 and 1555, and rebuilt in 1640 after being damaged again in 1638.
It consists of a single nave built of irregular rubble stones of yellow Ardennes stone. At its end, it is surmounted by a large square choir whose shape is reminiscent of that of a watchtower. Together with the tower attached to it, it forms the most striking element of the church’s fortifications. Under the roof of the tower is an escape room reached by a staircase in the tower, which itself has some embrasures.
In 1750, the church was finally embellished by the opening of large windows.
